Results from KPMC #12

Kevin Farrell was representing Ireland at the 12th Korean Prime Minister’s Cup. He gave a creditable performance, picking up 2 wins over the course of 6 rounds to finish in 45th place. If I read the results table correctly, he won against Guatemala and Ecuador, but lost to Belgium, Sweden, Macau, and Romania. It was Yikang Zhao of China who won the event.

There are some partial game records available on the KPMC website: MacauSwedenGuatemalaBelgium.

No photos available yet.

Hopefully Kevin can add more detail later!

Thanks Ian. The KPMC was great fun.

On Day One, I played a Belgium 3dan and a Guatemala 3k. I fell behind in the opening against the dual san san’s of Belgium. I ended up putting every on an attack in the centre but I didn’t gain enough and ended up resigning. Against Guatemala I captured 5 stones early in the game so felt ahead but lost 5 stones due to an endgame blunder so the game became very close. I ended up winning by 4.5 points.

On Day Two, I played two Four Dan’s from Sweden and Macau. Against Sweden, I played for a huge central Moyo, and I think was ahead until the endgame but then I was out-read and a group of stones was cut off and killed. Against Macau, I played a centre oriented strategy again but the centre was reduced too much in endgame so I lost by 20+ points.

On the Final day of games, I played a 6kyu from Ecuador and yet another 4 Dan, this time from Romania. Ecuador put up a great fight but I was ahead by 15+ in the end. Against Romania I played white against the high Chinese. We both ended up with huge Moyos. I should have sacrificed 2 stones in blacks Moyo but instead tried to be more active in using that aji. A massive fight broke out which I came out worse out of.

I would like to thank everyone I met at KPMC for the games, both official and un0ffical, all the reviews and the great atmosphere. Thanks also to all at the IGA for sending me on this. It was such a fantastic experience. Finally thanks to all the Organisers at KABA.

This was great training for the real tournament in Cork next month which I hope to see everyone at! 🙂
